The Government of India is committed to meet the growing energy needs at affordable rates required to meet the objectives of economic development. To deliver a sustained economic growth rate of 8% to 9% through 2031-32 and to meet life time energy needs of all citizens, India needs to increase its primary energy supply by 3 to 4 times and electricity generation capacity about 6 times. As a result energy service demand growth rates will keep on increasing because of accelerated industrialization, urbanization, and an emerging consumer society.
BEE was set up in March 2002 under the provisions of Energy Conservation Act of 2001 to provide a legal framework for the government’s energy efficiency initiatives in the country.
The Bureau’s mission is to develop policies and strategies with a thrust on self regulation and market principles with the primary objective of reducing energy intensity of the Indian economy. |
